Faculty of English Language and Literature

The programme of the Faculty of English Language and Literature includes courses that stay in tune with the latest trends in teaching language and literature. Its focus is no longer only on language learning and literature classes that deal with individual movements or phenomena, but it cherishes an interdisciplinary approach, in which language and literature are taught along with and compared to other topics, such as philosophy, media studies, the language of business, law, as well as cultural theory.

The courses surpass the method of strict divisions between different fields of the English grammar and literature, so the definitions and the areas included in the material are taught in a wider context. Thus, linguistics is connected with language history, theory is linked to the social and political conditions of the period in which it developed, literature is associated with other dimensions of human creativity, such as the imagination or the consciousness. In both the linguistic and the literary approaches, not only English, but also authors from other countries are studied, so that apart from the main concentration on English and American writers, also French, German, Spanish and Russian classics, as well as significant authors from South America, Africa and Asia are covered in some courses.

Theory and practice in translation are also a very important part of the programme. It concentrates not only on newspaper articles or texts that include basic information from the natural and social sciences, as has traditionally been the case, but also focuses on oral interpretation practices. It combines materials from the areas of business, medicine, law and many other fields in which there has been an increasing need for translation in the last decade in Macedonia in order to prepare students who want to work as translators and interpreters master a wide scope of vocabulary and grasp the meaning of the wider context.

Within the framework of the Faculty of English Language and Literature, we run the English as a Foreign Language Department, which offers English language classes to all interested students. We help them not only to improve their language comprehension and fluency, but also to pass standardized tests, such as TOEFL, Cambridge or IELTS.
