The Faculty of Communication and Media Studies offers courses that help people develop and refine their "communication" skills, translating them into a tangible advantage leading to success in every area of life. At the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies we vigorously engage in the social investigation and transformation of communication practices, weaving together perspectives, theories, and methods from sociology, psychology, art, design, anthropology, philosophy, history, media studies and production, cultural studies, and critical theory. Our expansion into old and new disciplines reflects our faculty's shared commitment to innovative work, crossing disciplines, media forms, and social contexts. Our courses incorporate methods, theories, and texts from a range of fields. Our unique curriculum combines foundational courses in communication, advanced theory offerings and senior seminars, and applied electives.
Students of communication develop their interpersonal and public communication abilities and learn to appropriate various communication media: webpage design, TV/video, journalism, desktop publishing, & visual images. They will be able to lead in organizational communication, public relations and advertising. They learn new ways of thinking about communication as they explore everything from interpersonal communication to new media technologies. Our students develop critical and analytical skills for understanding the role of communication in their own lives and in the larger society. We emphasize theory, methods of inquiry, and critical thinking on a variety of topics, including the technologies of communication and the nature of social institutions; communication and the constitution of social identities and relationships; communication and cultural politics; intercultural and global communication; film history and theory; mass media effects; and regulations affecting communication technologies.
Our approach to studying communication produces graduates with advanced literacy and critical thinking skills and with understandings of communication principles, processes, and contexts. Such an education gives our graduates a strong and flexible foundation for careers in a society in which job requirements and individual career trajectories regularly change. The result is a dynamic program of study that has grown to become one of the best in the country.
